• 9 to me the eldest, 6 to next in line and 2 to the youngest brother

IGN is Scoot on all servers, all the time.

• Mark will add one horse to the 17 beautiful horses to become 18
Then give the 1/2 to the oldest = 9
and give 1/3 to the next = 6
and give 1/9 to the youngest = 2
The sum of horses 9+6+2 = 17
then mark will got back his horse

• Mark gives up his own horse.
This makes 18 horses to be divided between the three sons.

First son gets: 9 horses
Second son gets: 6 horses
Third son gets: 2 horses

Which leaves one horse for Mark.

• 9 horses for the oldest son, 6 horses for the next son, and 2 horses for the youngest son

• 9,6,2 innit.

1st son — half of the horses (17/2)=8.5
2nd son — one third of horses (17/3)=5.66
youngest son — one ninth of horses (17/9)=1.88
By rounding this numbers up - 1st son should get 9 horses, second should get 6 horses and the youngest should get 2 of them - 9+6+2 = 17. This keeps the proportions as left by the diseased father.

• They would be devided by the ammoubt each son should get :

First son - 17/2 rounds up to 9

Second son 17/3 rounds up to 6

Third son 17/9 rounds up to 2

So their overall number of horses is 17

• 1) 9 horses
2) 6 horses
3) 2 horses

Need to add 1 horse and then take it back

• The trick here is to round up.

1/2 go to the first son, ceil(17/2)=9 horses
1/3 go to the second son, ceil(17/3)=6 horses
1/9 go to the third son, ceil(17/9)=2 horses

And 9+6+2=17.

• 9 to older brother 6 to next in line 2 to younger brother

• Add one more horse to it to make the count 18.

Then 1/2 goes to the eldest son which would be 9.
1/3 goes to the next one which would be 6.
1/9 goes to the youngest, that's 2 horses.
Then take back the 1 horse which was added to it.

So the total 17 horses gets distributed among 3 sons.

• The first son gets 9 horses. The second son gets 6 horses. The third son gets 2 horses.

• Answer: The eldest son should get 9 horses, the second should get 6 and the youngest should get 2 horses.

Calculation:
The easiest way to solve it is to add 18th horse to the herd. Then we calculate 1/ 2 = 9 horses to one brother, 1/3 = 6 horses to another brother and 1/9 = 2 horses to the third. 9+6+2 = 17. Trick is, that 1/ 2 + 1/3 + 1/9 ≠ 1, it’s actually less than 100% therefore each of the brothers will get a bit more than their share).
