    Answer:

The library door through which the thief escaped(as per librarian) opens from right to left towards inside... but the mess around the door is all next to the door which means the mess was put next to the door after the door was opened while thief escaped or the door never opened and mess was setup.

If the thief would have made the mess & then escaped through the door then while escaping through the door the mess would have also moved aside away from door.

The librarian claimed to have been knocked out and also claimed to have seen the direction the thief fled. One of these must be a lie as if he was knocked out he would not have been able to witness the thief's flight. There is also a pile of books by the door in the picture indicating that it was not recently opened and used by the thief.

  • The books are on the floor in front of the door so it couldnt have opened for the "theif" to escape. Plus the librarian says he was "knocked out", if this was so how could he even try to stop the theif getting away and how did he know it was only 1 book taken if he was knocked out?

The books laying at the base of the door had to be put there after the door was closed, therefore there was not someone who left through the door after the mess was made.

  • The books are piled up against the now-closed door. This means someone on the inside would have had to fake the mess after the thief left and closed the door.

  • Answer: The items and mess right at the front of the door indicates that the door is not open recently. Therefore, it doesn't seems like someone (or the thief) passed through this door recently

The door the librarian pointed to had books in front of it.

The thief could not flee throw that door with books blocking it and not move them.

  • Oops forgot to say Jupiter777 Anglosphere 4 - Books are thrown against the door that he would have exited. When he pulled open the door, the books would have been moved away from the door.

  • If the thief ran through the door in the picture, it would be opened. And if he closed the door behind him, the books on the floor, woudn't be next to the door, the books would be moved away from it.

  • Hi Stellamini,

A thief will not leave a mess near the exit side door. Usually the mess would have been created while searching for something, which should have been on the other side where the librarian claims to have had the scuffle. That's what's wrong with the librarian's story.

  • Based on the image above, if the thief had opened the door and left, the books would have been brushed to the side, and not returned behind the door unless the librarian put them there. (I believe this is the answer the puzzle is looking for)

But also, if the librarian was truly knocked out, how would he have know where the thief fled to? He could have run out the same door the Maximus came in! Haha lots of holes in the story!

  • Answer: the door is shut and has books placed close to it. If the thief would have ran away through that door, the books would not be there (near the door).
