Not again! After all those years, hundreds of years of my blissful negligence in that old library, some petty thief suddenly decided he couldn't live without the secret knowledge hidden on my pages.
Why should it always happen to me? Get me back!
I was rather rudely taken from the distant shelf, where I was happily living with my buddies "Funny Stories", "Commentaries on Gallic War" and others,
and put into a dirty pouch together with ointment, spurs, an old map and even something that looked strangely like a water bucket.
The few days spent in the bag on horseback almost cost me my clasp and felt like a real torture. Eventually, though, we seemed to arrive.
Only a few candles provided some light inside the huge room I ended up in. As much as I could see from my perspective, the whole room was cluttered with various things.
Different weapons, armor, pennants and scrolls seemed to be piled wherever there was space. Priceless gladiator helmets were mixed up with rather cheap ointments and tablets of law.
There appeared to be no one else there, which is why the voice from the dark corner brought a shiver to my spine.
"Finally," there was something scary about the manner in which the person spoke, "I have been waiting for you.
The heralds announced the new meeting place where everyone can discuss what happens in our world and people start gathering here.
I was worried someone might recognize you in the crowd. Did you open the book?"
"Not yet," the thief shrugged his shoulders, yet he seemed unperturbed by the low voice, "yes, I saw lots of people arriving but no one noticed me.
Everything went according to plan. I found the old book without a name on it, with the coded clasp."
"Perfect. Let's open it."
"You sure? I've heard those books might change your personality when you read them, but they would then vanish immediately.
This must have cost tons of silver."
"Don't worry. If this is indeed that book, it should not disappear." The voice sounded encouraging. "Try it.
And even if it disappears, isn't that what you always desired? Enhance your strengths and become the best thief ever. Not a bad deal at all."
The thief shrugged again, but had made a decision.
"Why not?" He swiftly unlocked my clasp and opened my cover. "Hmm… I don't see anything here. It's empty."
"What?" The second person, an old Gaul with a crooked nose and cunning expression on his face, finally stepped into the light and quickly glanced at my open page.
"How can the empty book change anyone's personality?"
"I don't think it changes anything." The thief looked puzzled. "And even if it did, I'm pretty happy with what we're doing, producing resources to develop our new villages.
Why should we change? I have been a farmer my whole life."
"I agree." The Gaul scratched his head. "We need to get back to our farms.
By the way, where did you say you took that book?"
"I don't remember. But I don't think we should read it. And it costs tons of silver!"
The same day, I was sold at auction.
Task: Solve the auction puzzle.
