Does the "o" in your name (Xlore) can be counted as 'zero' ? Just wondering! 
My argument is that they are good for initial days but check the same calculator for Late Def, they come the last. In the end it is the crop to troop ratio which determines the strong troop type. May be that's why they have introduced the waterworks. Don't know how effective that's going to be, because we defenders dont get much cropper with good oasis.

Of course they are cheap and fast to produce, but compared to phalanx they are only half as good and consume 1 crop. If they reduce the crop to 0.5 then they can make very powerful anvil.
In my opinion, slave militia is useless. They dont have def stats like a phalanx or spearman and most importantly they consume 1 crop. Who would want to have this troop, which basically hogs all the crop and do nothing.
