      (1) About Hero Items
      _________________________

      What is an item?
As part of T4's new game play, Heroes can be equipped with items that make your Hero stronger and/or give a bonus to the troops he is travelling with, as well as items that are able to increase build times in your village, and travel times between alliance members. They cannot be stolen by other players and they cannot be lost if the Hero dies in combat. The only draw back is that your Hero can only wear one of each type at any one time - for example he can't wear two helmets, for a start he would look ridiculous! There are also consumable items that can improve healing, culture, loyalty and help you capture wild animals! All of these could be yours - read on!

      Equipables & Consumables
There are two 'scopes' of item - the equipable and the consumable. An equipable item can continue to be used and re-used throughout the server without losing any effect. It will always work in the same way and it never disappears. This applies to things like helmets, shoes, shields, horses and swords.
      [float=right]http://i.imgur.com/EMJWs.png[/float]
A consumable item is a one-use item, once you have applied its effect it will disappear and you cannot use it again. This applies to things like bandages, ointment, cages and artwork. Well you wouldn't want a re-used bandage would you!

      Item Rarity
In the posts below, I've sorted the items into tiers. The tier depends on how easy it is to obtain that item, either through adventures or auctions. Tier 1 items are the most common in the game and most of them can be found very early in the server - but they are also the weakest in terms of the bonus they provide. These are the sort of items you will find available to trade at the auction house.

Tier 2 items are still common but less common than Tier 1, and usually become available further into the game. Their bonus is better than Tier 1 but not as good as Tier 3. The Tier 3 items are rare to find, not only because they are harder to obtain on adventures but also because their bonus is the greatest so once somebody has obtained one they are less likely to want to give it up!

Judging by previous servers (closed beta and open beta) the Tier items appear roughly around these days:

      1x speed servers
      Tier 1 - Day 1-75 of server
      Tier 2 - Days 75-165 of server
      Tier 3 - Day 165 onwards

      3x speed servers
      Tier 1 - Day 1-25 of server
      Tier 2 - Days 25-55 of server
      Tier 3 - Day 55 onwards

From this stage in the guide, any information regarding 3x servers will be written in purple.

      How do I get items?
To get items for your Hero, you are going to need to send him on many adventures (found by clicking the X-marks the spot map tab on the side of your Hero's profile). Not all of the adventures you send him on will yield the best results - sometimes he loses health and sometimes he returns with nothing (although he will always get experience from going even if he is empty handed). But more often than not your Hero will bring home gifts of silver, resources, ointments, new swords, or even stray troops or a horse which he was able to find in the mountain / forest / lake. The more adventures you send him on, the more likely you are to pick something up so keep trying.

If you've had bad luck with adventures, you can still obtain Hero items by shopping for them in the Auction House (found by clicking the little hammer tab on the side of your Hero's profile). Here you can find all sorts of items being sold by other players' on your server. You may not find the ones you're looking for, but be patient - others are just as keen to find and keep hold of Hero items and may not be willing to trade just yet. Later on in the game when more and more people find their items building up and duplicating, they will be more happy to sell them.

Read more below on how to obtain a Hero item by doing adventures and visiting the Auction House.

      _________________________

      Adventures
So you want to get some hero items? We'll give you a brief walk-through of the adventure system to help you get started. If you followed your Questmaster at the beginning, he will already have taught you how to send your hero away and find things. Your account size has no bearing on what you receive, you could be a very small player and discover something very rare and valuable, so don't be disheartened if you don't find much when you begin because the first 10 quests always yield the same items - a horse, extra resources, silver, stray troops, cages, a book of wisdom and some ointments. But you want to discover more than this!

^ This table shows the frequencies you will get adventures on your server - the spawning of adventures is at random intervals throughout the day so you might get them in clumps rather than spread out evenly. Also the day count starts from account activation, NOT from the server start - so look at the dove on your profile to find the exact time and registration of your account to work out the day you're on for adventure frequency. As well as these, you will get 3 adventures upon activation, so will receive 6 adventures in the first day.

To begin an adventure, click on the X-marks the spot map tab on the side of your Hero's profile. This will take you to the adventure screen which looks like this:

Then click > To the adventure, and choose Start Adventure. Your Hero must be at home and alive for you to send him away on an adventure. As soon as he reaches the adventure destination, you will get a report of his findings. The small image on the right of the un-opened report will give you a clue as to what he found. Did you find what you wanted? If you didn't, take a look at the Auction House below to see how else you can get the items you're after.

      Auction House
Unable to get any items on the adventures? That's unlucky, but we can give you a very brief guide on how to use the Auction House to find the item you desire. To get to the Auction House, click the little hammer tab on the side of your Hero's profile picture. On the next screen, you'll be faced with the Buy screen. At the top is a grey bar showing you how much silver you have to spend on the left, and a row of boxes allowing you to filter the items you want to search for:

The image shows I have 164,206 silver available to spend. In order from left to right, the filter boxes above show equipable Helmets, Body Armour, Left-handed Items, Right Handed Items, Shoes, Horses, and then all the remaining consumables - Small Bandages, Bandages, Cages, Scrolls, Ointments, Buckets, Books of Wisdom, Tablets of Law and Artworks. Until you click one of these images, the filter is off so you can see all items which are nearing the end of the auction.

To bid for an item, click the green text on the right which says 'Bid'. The page will reload and open a grey shaded bidding drop down screen on the item you have selected. This lets you enter a Maximum Bid, the maximum you are willing to spend on this item. If the item is currently being sold for 2,000 and you are happy to pay 8,000 silver - type 8,000. In this example below, I am bidding 50,300 silver for 26 Books of Wisdom.

Note that your silver will disappear when it is being held in 'reserve', this means the game keeps your silver until the auction is over and if you don't win it all gets returned to you. If somebody then tries to bid anything between 2,000 - 8,000 silver they will keep being told they are out-bid, because the game is automatically out-bidding them on your behalf with the 8,000 silver you committed. Also understand this procedure in reverse - if you continue trying to bid and keep being told you have been outbid, it is because another player has put a high reserve on the item. Note there is no way to trade or send items between players or inside the alliance.[float=right]http://i.imgur.com/hG2XZ.png[/float]

An auction is not over until the counter reaches 0:00:00. With every new bid placed within the last 5 minutes (?), the time increases to allow more players a chance to bid on the item. So you won't get a great chance to be sneaky, but there is still a strategy to trading such as buying low, selling high, bidding at night, and so on. This is just brief intro to the Auction House, there are better guides describing Auctions in the Guide section :)

How do I equip my hero?
Once you've got your item - congratulations! It's time to apply it. Note that an item will have no effect if it remains in your item list, you need to equip it or consume it, so make your way over to your Hero screen by clicking on his face in the circle on the top right. You'll be confronted with a set of boxes, containing pictures of the items you've managed to obtain. To 'use' one, click the image.

If it is an equipable item (e.g. a helmet) then the helmet will be applied immediately and appear on your hero. But consumable items are more tricky and can be moved or applied depending on its effect. They can also be carried in your Hero's sack - go to the post (11) Consumable Items to find out more about how to use them.

Once you have equipped or 'used' an item on your hero, the effect will take place (consumable) or begin (equipable) immediately. If you're a Travian veteran and have played older versions of the game, it's important to note that this is unlike Travian 3.0 where you had to wait 24 hours before the effect was activated. Travian 4.0 effects are instant.

      (3) Helmets
      _________________________

      Equipable Item
Helmets are equipable items - this means that once your hero has put the helmet on, the bonus effect begins immediately. The Helmet can then be removed at a later time without losing its bonus, and re-used by yourself or sold via auction to another player.

      Helmet Types
There are 15 helmets (3 tiers of 5 types) available to find on Travian 4.0 servers, including helmets which can generate more hero experience, hero health, village culture and even decrease the training time of your troops in the Barracks and Stables.

      Item Differences
The helmet bonuses are the same on both 1x slow servers and 3x speed servers, apart from the Helmet of the Gladiator / Tribune / Consul where the culture points per day varies. The Helmets effecting Barracks and Stables only apply to the village the Hero is stationed at, they don't apply to the entire player account. You must move the Hero around for the effect to happen in other villages.

      Body Armour Types
There are 12 body armour items (3 tiers of 4 types) available to find on Travian 4.0 servers, including armour which can improve fighting strength, provide quicker health regeneration and prevent damage.

    • (5) Left-Handed Items
      _________________________

      Equipable Item
Left-handed items are equipable items - this means that once your hero has been equipped with the item, the bonus effect begins immediately. The item can then be removed at a later time without losing its bonus, and re-used by yourself or sold via auction to another player.

      Left-handed Item Types
There are 18 left-handed items (3 tiers of 6 types) available to find on Travian 4.0 servers, including left-handed which can increase troop speed between your villages or alliance members, hero speed or fighting strength, and the fighting strength or plundering bonus of your army.

      Notable Points
The left-handed item bonuses are the same on both 1x slow servers and 3x speed servers, and it is important to note that ALL plundering bonuses ONLY apply to troops sent with the Hero. In T4.0 Teuton Heroes have a unique 20% plundering bonus for troops accompanying the Hero, the plundering bag/pouch/sack on Travian T4.0 can be used by all tribes - Roman, Gaul and Teuton. So coupled with their tribe benefit and the item benefit, a Teuton Hero could have a 40% plundering bonus.

Also note that the bonus gained from the maps and plundering sacks covers the hero and all troops sent alongside him. So the speed bonus and plunder bonus is only active if the hero is travelling too.

      _________________________

      Equipable Item
Right handed items are equipable items - this means that once your hero has been equipped with the sword/lance/hammer, the bonus effect begins immediately. • (10) Mounts / Horses
      _________________________

      Equipable Item
Horse mounts are equipable items - this means that once your hero has mounted the horse, the bonus effect begins immediately. The hero can then be un-mounted at a later time and the horse won't lose its bonus, it can be re-used by yourself or sold for silver via the Auction House to another player.

      Item types for Gauls
There are 3 horse mounts (3 tiers of 1 type) available to find on Travian 4.0 servers, they all improve the speed of the Hero itself.

      Things to Note
The field increase for the mounts only apply to the Hero, not accompanying troops. But it does mean he can travel faster so can be sent with cavalry and not slow them down. Gauls have a unique tribe bonus of +5 Hero speed if the Hero is mounted (+10 Hero speed on 3x servers), so their speed values will always be the values shown in the tables +5 or +10. The mount is also important for the Spur Boots to work, as they are ineffective without a Mount. When you have mounted your Hero on horseback, he is now considered as a cavalry unit in combat. Without the horse mount he is considered an infantry unit in combat.

    • (11) Consumables
      _________________________

      [float=right]http://i.imgur.com/7e5F7.png[/float]
Your Hero now has his own bag which he can take with him on journeys. This is not to be confused with the equipable item called the Sack/Bag/Pouch - they are two separate things.

The Hero's bag allows him to carry consumable items, and can be located by the square next to his feet on the bottom right. Items which aren't in his bag, are held in storage, which is the 12 square grid on the right.

The Hero's bag is a place where you are able to drag items for him to use or carry. Items such as ointments, tablets of law and books of wisdom when moved into the bag are used instantly when equipped so cannot be carried. Whereas bandages, small bandages and cages need to be equipped and carried with the Hero to be used during or after combat.

It is also worth mentioning that some of the consumable items below are 'stackable'. This means you can collect any number of them and use them all at the same time, eg Bandages and Scrolls can be hoarded and used in a large group. The term stackable also means in your Hero's inventory that they will appear as 1 image but the number in the grey box will change when you get more. Whereas other items like the Book of Wisdom or the Bucket are not stackable, they have to be used separately (since you do not need to revive your Hero twice or change his statistics twice at exactly the same time). As these items are not stackable, they will appear separately in your inventory (8 books of wisdom will account for 8 spaces in the inventory, not 1).

The Hero's inventory appears to be infinite and have no set limit of equipable and consumable items that you can carry.

Take a look at the list below of consumable items available on Travian 4.0.

    • nice guide, howeverm whenever i am trying to bid for something, no matter how much i bid, it always says that i have been outbid. Even if something costs 200 silver, and i bid 1200 silver, it still says that i have been outbid. any ideas?

That's because someone's placed a large amount on it already, so until you go over the amount they've already placed it will continue to say that you've been out bid.
    • I have a question; if you bought say 10,000 gold and converted it all into silver that would give you 1,000,000 (1 million) silver? Couldn't you just buy lots of tablets of law and settle villages like crazy?

I've only just started up on UK7 so I'm not too sure on the logistics, so don't shoot me down? ;D
    • I suppose you could, would be a waste. Besides things only apear in auctions when someone has won it and doesn't want to use it but sell it on, i doubt items like that will be common drops from adventures.

In fact after just checking none are on the auction house and I would have thought being what tehy are that people would use them rather than sell them.

    • Nice useful guide, one quick note, pretty sure (99.9%) that the below is wrong:

      Things to Note
You may find one of these items even if you are a Roman or Teuton; your Hero is still able to use the equipment but your troops cannot benefit from the tribe-specific bonus. Most players would seek to sell this and buy an item suited to their tribe.

You only ever find tribe specific items :)
    • I really liked your T4.0 Items Guide! I found it very informative and useful. I'd love to use it in a project, I'm involved with called forum.travian.co.id, so I'm seeking your permission.
